References from Hinduism

The majority of Hindu philosophers today agree that we are nearing the end of the Kali Yuga (the Dark Age) which is the last stage, characterised by widespread suffering and spiritual degradation.

Rulers during Kali Yuga

And, O lord of men, numerous Mleccha kings then rule over the earth! And those sinful monarchs, addicted to false speech, govern their subjects on principles that are false.
- The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Today, it is difficult to find a ruler of a country actually sincere with its citizens. Indeed, the situation in countries such as Pakistan testifies to the fact that politicians in this age are "addicted to false speech". With the recent release of confidential government documents by Wikileaks, more "sinful monarchs" are being revealed.

All kings occupying the earth in the Kali Age will be wanting in tranquillity, strong in anger, taking pleasure at all times in lying and dishonesty, inflicting death on women, children, and cows, prone to take the paltry possessions of others, with character that is mostly vial, rising to power and soon falling.
– Sanskrit Puranas

The pretense of greatness will be the proof of it, and powerful men with many severe faults will rule over all the classes on Earth.
– Sanskrit Puranas

And filled with avarice and swelling with pride and vanity and, unable and unwilling to protect (their subjects), they will take pleasure in inflicting punishments only.
- The Mahabharata, Book 3

And the kings of the earth with souls steeped in ignorance, and discontented with what they have, will at such a time, rob their subjects by every means in their power.
- The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Undeniably, the politics of today involve a considerable amount of lying and dishonesty, due to the fact that politicians in this era have the media to answer to; even 100 years ago, there was never this much transparency demanded of rulers. Recent revelations, thanks to Wikileaks, confirm the fact that many rulers have been stealing from their citizens and purposefully causing harm, even in more developed countries.

People will follow the customs of others and be adulterated with them; peculiar, undisciplined barbarians will be vigorously supported by rulers.
–Sanskrit Puranas

▼ Explanation

The Taliban, the modern-day barbarians of the world, are supported by various governments in the Middle East such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and are working to disrupt peace all over the world. Many citizens in these countries, and those living elsewhere, fall prey to the hateful doctrine of the Taliban due to ignorance and poor living conditions (a result of insincere leaders).

The State of Society

Dharma becomes very weak in the Kali Age. People commit sin in mind, speech, and actions.
- Sanskrit Puranas

▼ Explanation

Religions today have lost their spiritual systems due to adulterations made to holy texts over time; as a result, finding God through them is practically impossible. The Taliban, the modern-day barbarians of the world, are supported by various governments in the Middle East, for example Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and are working to disrupt peace all over the world. Many citizens in these countries, and those living elsewhere, fall prey to the hateful doctrine of the Taliban due to ignorance and desperation born out of poor living conditions (a result of insincere leadership).

Many profess to have supreme knowledge because, thereby, they will easily earn their livelihood. In the Kali Age, there will be many false religionists.-Sanskrit Puranas
- Sanskrit Puranas

And men with false reputation of learning will, by their acts, cause Truth to be contracted and concealed.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

And filled with covetousness and ignorance, and bearing on their persons the outward symbols of religion, they set out on eleemosynary rounds, afflicting the people of the Earth.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Today, we see countless so-called religious scholars in all religions that use the name of God in order to earn livelihood. It is because of these false religionists that Holy Texts have been adulterated and misinterpreted, also resulting in the creation of sects and thus, the loss of the spiritual system in the religion.

And people leading domestic lives, afraid of the burden of taxes, become deceivers.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Today, tax evasion is common.

People will freely commit abortion. Earth will be valued only for her mineral treasures. Money alone will confer nobility. Power will be the sole definition of virtue. Pleasure will be the only reason for marriage. Praise worthiness will be measured by accumulated wealth.
- Sanskrit Puranas

Marriage ceases to exist as a holy union - men and women simply live together on the basis of bodily attraction and verbal agreement, and only for sexual pleasure.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam

▼ Explanation

Although abortion is controversial, a large number of people, especially in the developed world, have had abortions and admit to it. There are many clinics today openly offering abortions. In this day and age we are seeing a massive misuse of the Earth's resources; most people are not interested in appreciating Earth as more than a source of goods and resources, to be used for profit. Practically, those with money have power; and those with power are respected. Nowadays, we see many people getting married, and divorcing months later as the pleasure of the relationship fades.

Men at such periods behave contrary to the modes of life to which they betake themselves, and addicted to intoxicating drinks and capable of violating the beds of their preceptors, their desires are all of this world, pursuing matters ministering to the flesh and the blood.
- The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Unfortunately, this statement describes the situation in this day. Heavy drinking is but a norm of modern society, and many people become addicted. Lust and vulgarity are also socially acceptable, and are encouraged through media outlets.

And, O king girls of seven or eight years of age do then conceive, while boys of ten or twelve years beget offspring.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Sadly, girls younger than 8 have given birth; the youngest in recorded history was 5 years old. Many cases in recent years have occurred of girls of aged 8-9 giving birth, even in the developed world. Similarly, young boys in recent years have been known to become fathers; in 2009, a boy in England impregnated his girlfriend at age 12.

And, O king, women then become mothers of numerous progeny, endued with low statures, and destitute of good behaviour and good manners.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

There are many broken families today in which both husband and wife have children, divorce, remarry, and have children with their new spouse.

And in such times, people behave sinfully even in places of public amusements in cities and towns.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

And, O monarch, both men and women will become perfectly free in their behaviour and will not tolerate one another's acts.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Today's free-sex, liberal society means that acting openly with the opposite sex is easily acceptable.

And divested of Yuga, people will become atheists and thieves.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Largely due to the loss of spiritual system in religions and their inability to connect humanity with divinity, more and more people are lead to become atheists. Thievery is common; as the world's economic situation becomes desperate, more people lose their jobs.

In Kali Yuga, young women freely abandon their virginity. Women, children, and cows are abused and killed during the iron age. Thieves are numerous and rapes are frequent. There are many beggars, and widespread unemployment.
–Lingua Purana

▼ Explanation

Today's free-sex society objectifies women (i.e through magazines, the music industry, etc), and push women to engage in activities encouraged by it. Thanks to the recent recession that we have barely begun to recover from, unemployment is widespread and an increasing number of people become homeless. Due to the tense diplomatic relations in the world, however, things will become much worse should we (as many believe) be heading towards WWIII.

Monks break their vows of celibacy.
- Visnu Purana

▼ Explanation

Regrettably, we hear many stories of religious clerics and monks who have visited prostitutes or who have raped their disciples.

People are without joy and pleasure. Many commit suicide.

▼ Explanation

Sadly, over one million people commit suicide each year, probably due to the increasingly stressful and disconnected life of the modern day man.

Over eating and drinking will disease many and deprive them of strength and sense.
–Mahanirvana tantra

Events during the End Times

And the illustrious chastiser of Paka never showers rain according to the seasons.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Thanks to climate change and global warming, the world is experiencing irregular weather patterns.

India will become desolate by repeated calamities, short lives, and various diseases.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

Although India is improving the more developed it becomes, the fact remains that, when the comet strikes Earth in 2026, various natural disasters and the onslaught of disease would be likely side effects. That being said, many calamities have struck India in recent years: the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the 2005 Delhi bombings, and the 2010 Leh and Panjab floods. In addition, a large number of the Indian population suffers from diseases such as HIV and AID's. Because the scripture was written before the partition of India and Pakistan, therefore referring to the two countries as a whole, the massive flooding of Pakistan can also be counted among the many calamities that have stricken.

And when the end of the Yuga comes, everybody will be in want. And all the points of the horizon will be ablaze, and the stars and stellar groups will be destitute of brilliancy, and the planets and planetary conjunctions will be inauspicious. And the course of the winds will be confused and agitated, and innumerable meteors will flash through the sky, foreboding evil.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

And then that fire, penetrating through the Earth and making its appearance, in the nether regions also, begetteth great terror in the hearts of the gods, the Danavas and the Yakshas. And, O lord of the earth, consuming the nether regions as also everything upon this Earth that fire destroyeth all things in a moment. And, O king, the clouds that gather in the sky on the occasion are terrible to behold and wreathed with lightnings, roar frightfully. And those vapoury masses, charged with rain, soon cover the entire welkin. And, O king, those masses of vapour then flood with water the whole earth with her mountains and forests and mines.
-The Mahabharata, Book 3

▼ Explanation

The comet that is to strike in 2026 would most likely cause widespread destruction i.e. natural disasters such as wildfire, earthquakes, and flooding. It would destroy the earth as we know it.
